In the 1970s Jane Fonda was the first celebrity to speak out against the Vietnam War. She became an activist, supported the African-American Black Panther movement, spoke about tragic fate of Native Americans and campaigned for peace.

With her second husband Tom Hayden, a figure of the militant left, she went to the American heartland to spread the word of peace. Together they created a life that reflected their ideals, far from the Hollywood standards Jane had known as a child. Modest house, Marxist activist or homeless neighbors.
She wanted to fund a campaign against inequality and she created aerobics videos that was sold in seventeen million copies in the blink of an eye and made her a new fitness star. This success will be the main cause of her breakup with her husband because he found her superficial.

Men don't make as much money as men for work of the same value.
Women can't telecommute because they don't have that kind of work.
Women continue to be responsible for the care and education of children much more than men, and do not have affordable homemakers available to them.
They are still victims of domestic violence.

Sara Everard was kidnapped and killed in London, while walking home from a friend’s house. This tragedy was followed by shootings in Atlanta where Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Xiaojie Tan and Daoyou Feng were killed.

Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention defending women from the violence against them and 6 were killed right after it.

There are who knows how many more women killed by men in the whole world in the past few weeks only because they were women.

Baroness Helena Kennedy, a member of the British Parliament, said: “Stop telling them (women) to stay at home and be careful, and start finding those responsible for the violence.”

And yes, once the crime has been committed, we need to look for the responsible. However, at the same time, we need to focus on prevention. Because when we are looking for the responsible, it is because it is too late, the crime has already been committed, the damage has been done.

‘’Our stories prove that violence against women isn’t an aberration, but a “global public health” crisis of “epidemic proportions,” as the World Health Organization describes it.

It is such a widespread, daily occurrence that it is rare to find a woman who hasn’t experienced some kind of sexual harassment or assault. Roughly one in three women around the world has been subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner, a family member, a friend, an acquaintance or a stranger, according to a W.H.O. report published this month.’’ says the reporter for NYT.

That is why there is a debate around making the violence against women a hate crime, since it is a misogynic act. Women get killed based on their gender and making it a hate crime makes sense.
